Description
Sodium metal reacting in water. Sodium (Na, sphere, centre) is a highly reactive alkali metal element which reacts with water (H2O) to produce sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen (H2) gas. The reaction is so violent that the gas being produced propels the sodium around the surface of the water, and small blisters appear on the metal's exterior.
