Description
Smoker's lungs. Computer artwork of lungs damaged through smoking, with alveoli in the background. At top is the voicebox (larynx, red) and trachea (windpipe, white), leading down to the lungs. The trachea splits (at centre) into the bronchi that supply air to each lung. Tobacco smoke is the major cause of lung cancer and several other lung diseases, such as emphysema - a disorder where the air sacs in the lungs become enlarged and damaged reducing the surface area for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The alveoli are the tiny air sacs of the lungs where gases are exchanged between the air in the lungs and the blood.
