Artist's Description
ATLAS-1 payload in orbit. View over the payload bay of Shuttle Atlantis, showing the first Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science (ATLAS-1) payload. This contained 12 instruments to perform experiments on the chemistry of the atmosphere, solar radiation, space plasma physics and ultraviolet astronomy. The three black spheres are part of the Space Experiments with Particle Accelerators (SEPAC) instrument. The cylinder at centre is the IGLOO, the payload's power supply. The backdrop here is the north Sahara Desert and part of the Atlas Mountains. ATLAS-1 was carried on Mission STS-45 of 24 March to 2 April 1992.
