Shuttle Discovery photograph taken with a 70mm camera of rainforest clearing in the far western Amazon Basin, Brazil, near the Peruvian border. The initial stage of the Brazilian government's programme for clearing & development shows a base road cut through the forest & running the full length of the picture. Along this road are dotted small villages, which appear as white spots. Secondary roads branch from the main road, like the backbone of some giant prehistoric creature. Small holdings of a few acres carved out of the equatorial rainforest are visible on either side of the secondary roads. They represent subsistence farming, the principal crops of which are maize.
