Pollution by acid rain. View of Lake Gardsjon, Sweden. Despite the idyllic scene, the lake itself has seen a hundred-fold increase in acidity over the last 40 years. Only the very hardiest plants and animals may now survive in the lake water. The acidification of the lake is due to acid rain - a result of industrial pollution of the atmosphere by oxides of sulphur and nitrogen.
