Description
Seven Mile Bridge, over Pigeon Key, in the Florida Keys, USA. The old bridge is at centre and the new bridge is at the bottom. The old Seven Mile Bridge, also known as the Overseas Highway, was built between 1908 and 1912 by Henry Flagler. It is a draw bridge that crosses a channel between the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Strait. The gap at centre left used to contain a swing span that opened to allow boats to pass through. The old bridge was originally called the Overseas Railroad. It was damaged by Labor Day Hurricane in 1935 and rebuilt as a vehicle highway bridge. The island (Pigeon Keys) was used as a work camp for Flagler's railroad. Photographed in 1997.
