Description
Prototype AGR nuclear reactor at Sellafield, Cumbria, England. This is the WAGR (Windscale Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor). It operated from 1962 as a small-scale prototype for the UK's AGR nuclear power stations. It used a low-enriched uranium oxide fuel. Photographed in 1981, just after the reactor was closed. The WAGR Project has been decommissioning the reactor. The project has taken many years as special procedures needed to be developed to dismantle the highly radioactive building. As of 2006, the fuel had been removed, and major parts of the site had been dismantled using remotely operated tools. Future tasks include storing the radioactive waste and deciding the long-term future of the site and the visible exterior of the building.
