Description
Seeding hurricanes, illustration. This method of controlling weather such as rain involves clouds being 'seeded' by ground-based missiles or by aeroplanes. This causes the clouds to release their water in the form of rain. Cloud seeding, used in various forms since the 1950s, is mostly used to increase precipitation in agricultural or drought-prone areas. The most common seeding materials are silver iodide and dry ice. The technique can also be used, as here, to influence the development of hurricanes by seeding of the eyewall clouds.
