Artist's Description

1997 El Nino.Coloured satellite images of Earth showing in time-lapse the 1997 El Nino event developing in the Pacific Ocean. The globes are dated (from left to right, top to bottom): 25 April, 25 May, 25 June and 5 September. The El Nino affects global weather patterns. Here, the difference in average sea heights and those caused by warm water of the El Nino are shown as colours, from purple (10 cm below normal level) through blue, green, yellow, red to white (20cm or more above normal level). Land masses are black. The El Nino is the red/white area moving eastwards along the equator across the Pacific. These images were taken by the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite.
