Sea fan coral (Subergorgia sp.) on a reef. The sea fan is a colony of tiny organisms which build this rocky structure around themselves for protection and support. The fan is orientated to present a large surface area to the prevailing current, allowing the coral organisms to filter plankton from the water. A scuba diver is silhouetted at upper left.
