Description
Sand dunes on Mars. Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter image of sand dunes in Richardson Crater on the southern hemisphere of Mars. The dunes are covered with sand coloured dust. Pale coloured patches indicate carbon dioxide frost while dark coloured areas are caused by winds that have removed the surface layer of dust to reveal darker basalt underneath. Rippled troughs on the surface are carved by carbon dioxide sublimation (transforming from solid to gas). Image obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on 8th September 2013.
