Salt and chalk in beakers of water. Salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) is soluble in water (left) and so dissolves to form a colourless solution. Chalk (calcium carbonate, CaCO3) is insoluble in water (right) and so forms a cloudy white suspension, where the chalk particles are evenly dispersed throughout the liquid but do not dissolve.
