Description
Rudolph Arthur Marcus (born 1923), Canadian-US chemist. Marcus worked at the University of North Carolina from 1952. It was there that he developed the theory named after him that extended transition state theory to form a generalised theory of chemical reactivity. This is now known as RRKM theory (Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory). Marcus was awarded the 1992 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to the theory of electron transfer reactions in chemical systems. His other awards include the National Medal of Science (1989), the Wolf Prize in Chemistry (1984-5), and was made Foreign Member of the Royal Society (1987).
