Artist's Description

Roux treating croup. 19th-century newspaper page of French physician, bacteriologist and immunologist Emile Roux (1853-1933) injecting treatment for a child with croup. The child's parents are in attendance. Croup, a respiratory disorder, was frequently caused by diphtheria. It was often fatal before the use of diphtheria vaccination. Roux worked with Louis Pasteur, and was a co-founder of the Pasteur Institute in 1887. Roux's 1888 publication on the cause of diphtheria identified the bacterium responsible, and he successfully developed a serum to treat it. Artwork by Lionel Royer (1852-1926) in the 24 September 1894 issue of Parisian newspaper 'Le Petit Journal'.
