Description
Roman bridge (Puente Romano), Cordoba, Spain. This bridge is 250 metres wide, spanning the Guadalquivir River. The Calahorra Tower (far right, built 1369) is at its southern end. The bridge was originally built around the 1st century AD to carry the Via Augusta across what was then called the River Baetis, into Corduba (Cordoba), the capital of the Baetica Province of Roman Hispania. Successive repairs and rebuildings, including work by Islamic engineers in the time of Arab rule, has replaced most of the original Roman structure.
