Roger Penrose (born 1931), British mathematician, mathematical physicist and philosopher of science. Penrose has worked on general relativity, cosmology, black holes, quantum mechanics, human consciousness, and mathematical tiling systems. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1972), his awards include the Eddington Medal (1975), the Royal Medal (1985), the Wolf Prize (1988), and the Albert Einstein Medal (1990). Penrose was Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at Oxford from 1973 to 1999. He was knighted (1994) and appointed to the Order of Merit (2000). Photographed in 2008, at the Mathematical Institute, Oxford, UK.
