Description
MODEL RELEASED. Robotic surgery. Surgeons using the robotic HipNav (hip navigation) system during hip replacement surgery. The system increases the accuracy of surgery to make prosthetic (artificial) hips stronger and longer-lasting. It uses pre-operational scans to build up a three- dimensional computer model of the area to be operated on and orientates itself during surgery using infrared sensors. The surgeons can view the operation site on the screen at top right. HipNav is the result of a collaboration between the Center for Medical Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University and Shadyside Hospital, both in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
