Rings of Uranus. This false-colour image was taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft on 21 Jan 1986, from a distance of 4.17 million kilometres. All nine known rings are visible here. The brightest outermost ring, epsilon (right), is neutral in colour. The other fainter rings show colour differences between them. The delta, gamma & eta rings (moving left, towards Uranus) appear in shades of blue & green; the beta & alpha are in lighter tones; and the 4th, 5th & 6th rings in faint off-white tones. The fainter, pastel lines seen in between are due to computer enhancement. The colours will provide information on the origin & nature of ring material.
