Artist's Description

Rex Smith airplane. Waterside test flights of an early biplane that was designed and built by the Rex Smith Aeroplane Company. This aviation company was founded by Rex Smith (1862-1923) in 1910 and went defunct in 1916. It produced the Rex Smith Biplane, powered by an Emerson 2-cycle, six-cylinder engine. The airplane had two propellers and a wingspan of 12 metres. It was flown by test pilot Tony Jannus (1889-1916). Test flights of this aircraft were from College Park airfield, Maryland, USA, where the Wright Military Flyers were also flown. Photographed in 1912.
