Description
Red admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) feeding on a flower head from a butterfly bush (Buddleia sp.). Red admirals, like most butterflies, feed on nectar, a sweet liquid produced by some flowers. The butterfly bush is named for its ability to attract large numbers of butterflies. These may play a role in pollination (transferring pollen between plants). The red admiral butterfly is a migrant, found in Britain mostly during the summer months after flying north from the Mediterranean. Red admirals born in northern Europe migrate south in the autumn. It is also found in North America, and Asia. Photographed in Northumberland National Park, England.
