Artist's Description
Reaction of magnesium carbonate in acid. Digital thermometer (top) being used to measure the temperature of a chemical reaction. The reading is 23 degrees Celsius. The reaction is between magnesium carbonate and sulphuric acid, to produce magnesium sulphate, carbon dioxide (the bubbles seen here) and water. This is a neutralisation reaction, with an insoluble base neutralising an acid. It is an exothermic reaction, giving out excess energy in the form of heat, and so raising the temperature of its surroundings.
