Description
Rainforest burned for crops in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve in Ecuador. In slash and burn agriculture an area of forest is removed of trees and burned. It is then planted with crops, and harvested for several years before the farmer moves on to a new area. It is an ancient method of farming. Provided that it is practised by experienced farmers who do not exhaust the soil by repeated planting and grazing their animals, it is probably the only sustainable form of agriculture in the poor soil of the tropical forests.
