Polarised light cross-section of the tongue of a rabbit (Oryctolagus sp.). The lower section of the image shows a network of interlacing skeletal muscles which permit an extensive range of movement. The upper section shows a layer of sharp edged papillae which facilitate the eating of grass and a range of foliage. Magnification: x27 at 10cm wide.
