Description
Quantum dots cancer imaging research. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of fluorescent quantum dot nanocrystals that allow increased sensitivity when detecting cancer. The nanocrystals are composed of a cadmium mercury telluride alloy core with several layers of zinc sulphide acting as a shell. The resulting optical and electronic properties can be finely tuned by altering the composition of the nanocrystal core. This is much easier than previous methods, as the particle size remains the same. This work was carried out by researchers at Emory University, USA. Image produced in 2012.
