Description
Pulkovo observatory near St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1889. It was designed and built under the supervision of German astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve (1793-1864) during 1835-39. It was sponsored and funded by Czar Nicholas I. It was very well equipped, and became the world's leading observatory. Its magnificent equipment included a 38-centimetre refractor telescope (in the tower at upper centre) and a 76-centimetre refractor (not seen here); this latter telescope was the world's largest for a number of years. Former soldiers were used to turn the telescope domes. The observatory was destroyed in 1941 by invading German soldiers during World War II.
