Artist's Description
Pterosaur (Coloborhynchus piscator), artwork. Pterosaurs, also known as pterodactyls, are an extinct group of flying reptiles that were the first vertebrates to evolve powered flight.C. piscator (formerly Anhanguera piscator) lived during the Early Cretaceous, 125-112 million years ago. Fossilised specimens, found in Brazil, have wingspans over 4 metres long and skull lengths of 50 centimetres. It is thought to have lived by the sea and fed on a diet of fish. Pterosaurs were able to fly due to their large wingspans and lightweight, hollow bones. Large species such asC. piscator are thought to have flown mainly by soaring and intermittent flapping. Fossilised trackways suggest that they were able to walk on land using all four limbs.
