Description
Proxima Centauri star. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri, which lies around 4.2 light-years from the Sun, in the constellation Centaurus. This is the closest star to our own solar system. It is what is known as a 'flare star', meaning that convection processes within the star's body make it prone to random and dramatic changes in brightness. Imaged by the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope.
