Artist's Description

False-colour bubble chamber photo of the product- ion of matter & antimatter. An antiproton (pale blue) enters from bottom & collides with a proton in the bubble chamber's liquid. In the resulting annihilation, the energy released rematerialises as 4 positive pions (red) & 4 negative pions (green). The two lower pions are less energetic & curve more in the chamber's magnetic field. The green one travels a short distance & is captured by a proton; the red one decays into a muon (yellow) & an invisible neutrino. Tracks not caused by the interaction, including the curlicues of low-energy electrons, are coloured dark blue.
