Artist's Description
Producing spider silk from plants. Researcher holding a jar containing spider silk extracted from plants. The insertion of specific spider genes into plants means that the plants produce the proteins necessary to make spider silks. This allows the mass production of these proteins and the fibres made from them could be used in a number of applications where a high strength material is required. Such as in the manufacture of bulletproof jackets, biomaterials for the aerospace industry, strings for tennis rackets, and airbags in vehicles. Photographed at the University of Wyoming, USA.
