Artist's Description
Solar power station. Tower at solar power station Solar Two". Sunlight is reflected onto the 91 metre-high tower from mirrors on the ground which automatically follow the Sun across the sky during the day. The sunlight heats a molten nitrate salt from 288 degrees celsius (C) to 565 C. The salt is then pumped down to a heat store before being used to boil water to drive electric turbines. The sto- red heat means that electricity can be generated up to 3 hours into the night. Solar Two power station is a refurbishment of the Solar One station near Barstow in California, USA. Solar Two uses 1926 mirrors and generates about 10 million watts of power - enough for 10,000 homes."
