Artist's Description

Potassium burning in chlorine. A piece of potassium metal has been dropped into a flask containing chlorine gas. At the bottom of the flask is damp sand. This causes the sodium to ignite, burning with a reddish orange flame. The white smoke is mainly potassium chloride, with some potassium oxide from residual air in the flask.
