Artist's Description

William Kroll. Portrait of the German-US metallurgist William J. Kroll (born 1889). Kroll established the first process for making metallic titanium in the 1950s. This process is now used to make zirconium, a metal used to clad fuel rods in nuclear reactors. Titanium is as strong as steel, but only half the weight and is used to make such things as aircraft and surgical implants.
