Artist's Description

The German physicist Max Born, 1882-1970. Born gained his doctorate at Gottingen and later became professor of physics. He had to leave Germany in 1933 because he was Jewish, and worked in Cambridge and then Edinburgh. He retired to Gottingen in 1953. His initial research interest was lattice dynamics, and how atoms in solids hold together and vibrate. In his work on quantum mechanics he gave electron waves a probabilistic interpretation: the rise and fall of waves could be taken to represent the rise and fall in probability that the electron would behave as if it existed at those particular points. In 1954 he shared the Nobel Prize for physics with Bothe.
