Polarised light micrograph of crystals of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Vitamin C is present in citrus fruits, rose hips & green vegetables. A deficiency of the vitamin in the diet may cause scurvy, symptoms of which include anaemia, haemorrhaging into the skin & gums & bruising & bone pains. Magnification: x10 at 35 mm size.
