Description
Pluripotent stem cells, Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a clump of pluripotent stem cells. Pluripotent stem cells are able to differentiate into any of the 200 cell types in the human body. The type of cell they mature into depends upon the biochemical signals received by the immature cells. These embryonic stem cells (ES) are derived from the inner cell mass of the pre-implantation blastocyst or embryo (around five to seven days post-fertilization in humans) that is pluripotent and capable of self-renewal in cell culture. This ability makes them a potential source of cells to repair damaged tissue in diseases such as Parkinson's and insulin-dependent diabetes. Magnification: x3500 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
