Description
Light micrograph of a section of human lung tissue showing pleural mesothelioma. This is a type of cancer that occurs when asbestos fibres are inhaled and become embedded in the protective lining of the lungs (pleura). Over time, asbestos fibres cause inflammation and scarring within the lining that can lead to the progression of the disease. However, this disease has been known to affect the lining of the abdomen and the lining of the heart.
