Pleistocene of North America. Illustration of the fauna and flora of what is now North America, during the Pleistocene (2.5 million to 11,000 years ago). This scene shows animals whose fossils have been found in the La Brea Tar Pits, California, USA. In the foreground is a Smilodon sabretooth cat (the most common fossil found here). This extinct prehistoric mammal was a powerful predator. Other mammals shown here include mammoths, a ground sloth, and prehistoric relatives of bison, rabbits and horses.
