Description
Plague victims, historical artwork. People suffering from plague outside a temple (upper right) where a king is making sacrifices to the gods. An angel of death and a bird are seen in the sky (upper centre). Doctors and healers are tending to the sick and dying, one of whom (foreground, lower left) has swollen and bleeding armpit lymph nodes. Before modern medicine identified the cause, plagues killed millions in epidemics such as the Plague of Justinian and the Black Death. This artwork is part of the Popular Graphic Arts collection, which consists of historical artworks from the 18th and 19th centuries. This artwork is by a member of the Audran family of French artists.
