Artist's Description

Pinned broken knee. Coloured X-ray of a plate and pins in a broken tibia (shin bone), in the knee joint of a 42-year-old man. The femur (thigh bone) is at top, and the fibula is at lower right. The tibia had been fractured through both the lateral and medial tibial plateaus (where the tibia forms part of the knee joint). On the scale used to assess damage to the tibial plateau, it was diagnosed as a Schatzker V fracture. The pins and screws were inserted to hold the bone together while it healed. This injury was sustained following a cycling accident.
