Artist's Description

Phonograph demonstration in Paris. 19th-century illustration of a phonograph recording at the Academy des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, on 27 April 1889. The phonograph had been developed in 1877 by US inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931). Those present are (from left): the Duke of Aumale, Henri d'Orleans (1822-1897), mineralogist Alfred des Cloizeaux (1817-1897), French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893), and astronomer Pierre Jules Janssen (1824-1907). Cloizeaux was President of the French Academy of Sciences that year. This phonograph had been presented to the Institut de France, and Gounod had been asked to make a recording of a song for the Paris World's Fair (the Exposition Universelle of 1889). This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
