Description
CT scanning. Patient passes into a computed tomography (CT) scanner. The patient is lying on a mobile table which passes head-first through the circular scanner. CT scanning involves directing thin beams of X-rays through the patient from the rim of the scanner. The images produced by these beams are combined by a computer to produce cross-sectional slices" through the body. CT scans produce good contrast between soft tissues and bone, and are useful in diagnosing cancerous tumours and other diseases."
