Description
Computer display of charged particle tracks in the central tracking chamber of the UA1 detector at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. A high-energy proton & antiproton have collided & annihilated within the chamber; their energy is materialised as a spray of new particles. The gas- filled chamber (outlined in blue) is strung with thousands of fine wires which pick up electrical pulses from the ionisation produced by the passage of charged particles. Each dot in the picture represents a hit" on a wire. The colours show the "depth" of the tracks: red & yellow are nearer, blue & green further away."
