Artist's Description
Paranthropus robustus skull. Paranthropus robustus (or Australopithecus robustus) is an early hominin, originally discovered in Southern Africa in 1938. It had large jaws and jaw muscles with the accompanying sagittal crest, and post-canine teeth that were adapted for the dry environment they lived in. The massive back teeth on this skull were coated in thick enamel, an adaptation to chewing tough, fibrous foods. Dental micro wear and texture analysis suggests this hominid ate hard foods such as roots, tubers and seeds. This specimens was found at Swartkrans, South Africa.
