Papillary necrosis of human kidney, light micrograph. Renal papillary necrosis is a form of nephropathy characterized by coagulative necrosis of the renal papilla. It is a ischemic necrosis (tissue death) that can be due to several pathological conditions. A common cause is analgesic nephropathy due to overexposure to analgesics such as aspirin, phenacetin and paracetamol.
