Description
Light micrograph of a section through the pancreas. The pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the alimentary tract from closely packed acini (clusters of secretory cells, in dark blue/purple). Pancreatic secretions neutralise the acidic contents coming from the stomach as they pass into the small intestine (duodenum). Islets of Langerhans (pale purple) secrete insulin and glucagon into the blood to regulate blood sugar levels. In pale blue is the lumen of interlobular ducts, where pancreatic secretions are collected and carried to the digestive tract.
