Description
Orbital space weapons. Artwork of a ground-based mid-course space missile defence system from around 2000. Projects such as the Strategic Defense Initiative were designed to defend the USA against ballistic missile launches from hostile countries. Here, several warheads have been launched, including some false ones to confuse the defence. A satellite system (upper right) and defence radar in western Europe triangulates the locations. Another installation of radars (in the USA, located on both coasts) and satellites guides the defence, which consists of guided rocket engines that destroy the armed warheads by colliding with them.
