Description
Optical CCD image of the barred spiral galaxy M95 (NGC 3351). M95 belongs to the SBb(r) type of galaxy. They have two main features: a well defined bar with no hint of resolution into stars and an internal ring which surrounds the bar and from which the spiral arms depart in a tangent. Bar and nucleus are dominated by a population of old yellow stars while younger blue stars characterise the arms. Here several HII regions are resolved as blue knots in which clusters of young stars ionise clouds of hydrogen. The image was obtained with blue-green, red and near infrared filters and it may be considered a true colour version.
