Description
Optical false-colour CCD (Charge Coupled Device) image of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 7479. It belongs to the SBb(s) type which contains galaxies with a well defined nuclear bar at the centre and the arms spring from the end of it at right angles. Nucleus and bar, coloured white and red are composed of old stars. Younger stars and clouds of ionised hydrogen are visible in the arms as yellow condensations. The four biggest white spots surrounded by a red ring are foreground stars in our own galaxy. In the left descending arm a dark lane of dust bisects the arm absorbing the light emitted from the stars.
