Description
Old Summer Palace. 19th-century artwork of buildings forming part of the Yuan Ming Yuan (Gardens of Perfect Brightness) imperial gardens, Beijing, China, known as the Old Summer Palace. This lakeside complex several kilometres north-east of the Imperial City, was founded in 1707 by the fourth Qing emperor. Following a diplomatic incident in the Second Opium War, it was destroyed, burnt and looted by British and French troops on 6 October 1860. The ruins are located to the east of the Yihe Yuan (Gardens of Nurtured Harmony) imperial gardens, known as the Summer Palace, which was also looted but survived.
