Description
Old Aswan Dam, 1900s. This dam, also called the Aswan Low Dam and the Great Nile Dam, was built at Aswan, Egypt, between 1899 and 1902 at the first cataract of the Nile. It was initially around 20 metres in height, but was raised twice to a height 36 metres above the riverbed. It was constructed from rubble masonry and faced with red ashlar granite. At the time, it was the largest masonry dam in the world. It is now used mainly to control the flow of water to the Aswan High Dam that was built 6 kilometres upstream in the 1960s. This photograph, which dates from April 1908, is from the Stereo-Travel Company.
